So turned the key pad 90 degrees, pulled out the kepad, replaced the 4 batteries, put it in back again and voila – it worked again. Bigger safes have a glass/porcelain link somewhere in the lock, so that if you try too hard to open it, that link will break, and you won’t be able to open it without a locksmith and total destruction. FWIW, the engineering of the innards (and their apparent cheapness) has to do with making the lock mechanism impervious to hard actuation (of the handle, for example).
